Smash! Crack! Boom! Are the sounds heard form a hotel room. A young boy is lying on the ground. Another man and a woman dressed in a black silk dress are standing above the bloody and bruised boy. “That’s what happens when you underpay for one of my girls”, the man says in a scruffy voice. The young lady takes a wallet off the dresser and pulls out a twenty dollar bill. They both exit the scene kicking the boy in the stomach as they pass. All this could have been avoided if only the boy was allowed to read The Catcher in the Rye.

The Book The Catcher in the Rye has been around for many years, since 1951 to be exact. Through those many people have objected to this amazing, unique tale. Due to the harsh language and realism in this book many people have chosen to ban it from schools and public libraries. I believe this book has a moral of some sort, you just have to be open minded enough to look for one under the rough pages of Holden Caulfield’s life. This book can teach us many things

One thing we can learn is redemption, deliverance from sin; salvation. For example, in the book, Holden Caulfield picks up a prostitute for $10. He didn’t do anything with her, but the next day at the train station Holden meets two nuns and gives them $10 for their convent. This is a sign that he felt bad about the night before and wanted to make his peace. Redemption is good for kids to learn about because it shows us that even though we do something terrible we can make up for it and be forgiven.

Another great reason not to ban it, is that it gives us a new perspective. You could thing about something one way and read this book and be introduced to a new way of thinking. For example, during his stay at the Pencey boarding school he tells us about his thoughts on Jesus and the Disciples. Holden says, “I like Jesus alright but his disciples were always letting him down”. That is a new idea to me and is unique because we always hear how great Jesus and his disciples were you usually never hear about anyone bringing one down without the other. I feel it necessary to learn and know about new ideas, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs because if we don’t how will know how to interact with people that use the same understanding.

Lastly The Catcher in The Rye should not be banned from schools or libraries because it’s a major wake-up call to what real life is really like. For example, Holden talks about suicide, transvestites, and things that are in other words “uncomfortable” subjects that people don’t really like to talk about. But if we kids don’t how can we prepare ourselves for when we come across them? Life shown through the eyes of Holden Caulfield gives us a new perspective on how life really is. Its not all the sunshine and butterflies that Hollywood likes to portray and if we don’t open our minds up to real life we won’t recognize it if it hit us between the eyes.

A young boy is walking down the street. He sees an old homeless man sitting on the front steps of a broken down shack. He goes up to him and gives him a twenty dollar bill and says, “Have a nice day sir.” The young boy did this to redeem himself for earlier that day. He learned the idea of redemption from the book The Catcher in The Rye.

My Dog

Do you know what? I am gonna tell you about my dog, and if you don’t like it then go away. My dog was a very large dog, he really was. I mean you never saw a bigger dog than that thing was he was like almost the size of a cow, I really mean it. This dog was the biggest dog on the block. My little sister Breanna would go up to this god damn dog and play with this thing. She really would. It would kill us the silly ways she would play with him. I mean it, she really would kill us. This dog was the chocolate lab dog every family wishes they had. He really was. I mean it you know all those family’s that have like six kids and a minivan, they all wish they had a dog like he was, they really do. You must want to know why I am writing about my dog, well because its a remembering thing because my dog froze to death a few years ago. He really did, I mean it. One night we came home and couldn’t find the god damn thing and we looked everywhere. Eventually we found him under this really big tree just frozen dead, I really mean it he was really frozen. So we had to bury this dog, we really did. We buried him under this tree we found him under cause this tree was the best place, it really was. But this dog, Moose was his name, was the best. He really was. Whenever anyone of us felt all lonesome and crap inside we would go outside and play with this dog, we really would. So when he died I was so depressed it made me crazy. It really did. The one it killed most was my dad. I mean it, I never saw my dad cry the way he did when that god damn dog died. I mean it he was depressed. He really was. I gave that dog to my dad for a birthday present, I really did. Well, that was chucking the crap around, I do that. But not about moose, I never throw crap around about him, I really don’t. I really do throw crap around to people, I mean if you’re a stranger who are you to know if I’m lying to you. I mean when will I ever see them again, I guess I wont see you, unless we meet unexpectedly or we know each other, but other than that I really mean it, why do strangers care? I mean it. I really didn’t give the dog to my dad for a present my ex- step mom did, oh I was throughly disgusted with her. I mean it, she was a real nasty lady. She was full of pimples on her face and she liked to clip her toenails all over. She weighed about 245, which for a lady is really to much. I mean it she was a real disgusting lady. I mean it, I really do. So this dog was like this tiny thing until about a month later when he was he was the biggest god damn dog on the block. I really mean, this dog was huge. He really was. Really. So we buried this dog and he was the best dog, he really was. We took him hunting once and that dog took off right after we had shot the stupid pheasant and brought it right back, he really did. But we had to hide from him cause he really wanted to play with the stupid bird, he really did. And thats all I have to say about that, it really is.

Response paper #1, Andy Goldsworthy December 12, 2007

Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy is an artist. We watched the documentary movie during class the past few days. I really enjoyed watching him create his art. He would get ideas to create his sculptures by watching the tide and movement of water. Andy builds his sculptures at the “edge of their destruction” because he feels that when he witnesses their death its like they’re drifting into another world. I thought that was really cool of him to give so much of his time into something and enjoy watching it “drift into a new world”.  Watching Andy struggle with his creative prossess and project building reminded me of how hard life can be. Also there was a part when he was trying to build this egg thing out of rock and no matter what he did it always fell over and died. That made me realize that even something may seem easy and you’ve done it a thousand and one times, everyone and their dog knows has, you can still have a hard re-creating it a second or third time.

I remember last term I was in Mrs. Keslers geography class and we watched this movie call The Medicine Man. In this movie one scientist has been down in the rain forest for like 5 years finding the cure for cancer and he finds it but can’t recreate it. The U.S. Sends down another scientist to help him she and him try for months to recreate this cure and through preserviernce and team work they were able to recreate the cure. Any way after like 8 times of failing Andy was able to build this giant egg rock thing.

One thing I found very funny was when Andy was making this thing out of thorns and little bits of frail twigs, it looked like a spider web of some sort. After it was completely done he sat down and the spider web broke and he didn’t get mad he just kind of shrugged and said “oops”. That reminds me of this one time me and my dad had just got done building this fence for my pig pen and we went inside to eat dinner went back out and the pigs had the fence completely torn down and destroyed, plus we had to go and find the things which took forever because they were hiding in a muddy, HUGE, cornfield it took hours.

I found it interesting the tools and supplies he uses for his sculptures. One that I found very cool was this sgiggly line he made with icicles. He got the shape from the meandering river and he found icicles, put them together in a sgiggly sort of way on top of a rock. Isn’t weird how one word can expand your way of thinking. Like for instance meandering that is just such a fun word, wouldn’t you say so? I learned that word during Earth Systems with Kurt Wood last term, he of course was talking about how the meanders of a river erode away the river walls. I just like the word, meander. You know meander is just the fancy word sgiggly. We Americans like to create big words for other words when the words are just fine the way they are. It makes no sense to me because sgiggly is such a good word, but meander is a fun word to but sgiggly rolls off the tongue a whole lot easier. Sgiggly. Wow, I have no idea what that has to do with anything! Anyway I really enjoyed the viewing of the Andy Goldsworthy documentary. It has reminded me of strange I can be and a lot of other good memories I have.
